Bad Technique

Someone used stones to carve into the old lettering.

ANY type of filling in of letters on tombstones or rubbing over them is NOT

recommended as it can weaken, tip, or break a stone!

Gorgeous Stones

This 170+ year old gravestone looks fresh cut, with guide line in tact: *One, Two.

1696: Original county of Bath is formed .

1710: Savitz Mill township is established (see Savitz United German Church).

1753: Rowan County, named for British Governor Matthew Rowan, formed from Anson County.

1823: Post office is established in Savitz Mill.

1846: Savitz Mill renamed Lutherville.

1849: Lutherville renamed China Grove, named for town's Chinaberry tree grove.

1873: Lots sold, China Grove is laid out.

1889: 11 Mar, China Grove is incorporated.

1896: 23 Oct, First Rural Free Delivery (RFD) Mail in NC delivered at China Grove Post Office, only 2nd in entire US!

1920: Last few trees from Chinaberry Tree Grove died.

1974: Old depot dismantled, grove of chinaberry trees die off.
